COMMUNITY BASED ART THE FOCUS OF THE 2018 FEBRUARY PUBLIC LECTURES AT ST PAUL’S CATHEDRAL IN KAMLOOPS
Art and communion come together in this year’s annual lecture series at St. Paul’s Cathedral in downtown Kamloops. St. Paul’s joins a growing number of faith communities across Canada who want to express themselves visually in the pursuit of justice and peace-making.
In HEARTS and HANDS: CONNECTION and CREATIVITY in COMMUNITIES of FAITH, Friday Feb 16, 7 p.m. participants will discover how art can enhance ritual experience and public worship, and how the making of that art in community can be its own reward: renewing personal creativity, building community, and deepening spiritual development.
The next day, in ROLLING UP OUR SLEEVES: CONNECTING COMMUNITY and CHURCH in DOWNTOWN KAMLOOPS, Saturday, Feb 17, 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. facilitator Thomas Roach will begin a conversation about art and sacred spaces – at home, in church and in community. He will then invite participants to imagine how we might come together to express common values through our own creative expression and through community collaboration.
Thomas Roach is a Vancouver based textile artist who uses cloth, stitching and dyeing as media to explore communal and personal narratives and spiritual themes. In 2017, he managed the (In)finite: Spiritual Conversations In Cloth exhibition for the Anglican Foundation of Canada at Christ Church Cathedral. It is in that community that he created the Prayers of the Church Project (2016) and co-led the Common Threads Indigo Quilt Project (2012-4).
The February Faith Lectures Project is an annual offering of St. Paul’s education committee which has attracted scholars, practitioners, and creative folks from across Canada for most of the past decade.
